Company and Product Profile
Seaward is a world leader in innovative uses of plastics and elastomer technology. Founded in 1973, the company provides a wide range of products and services to the marine industry, including marine fenders and buoys, elastomer coatings, plastic pilings and timber, and special anechoic coatings and installation equipment, and composite railroad tie is also under development. For nearly thirty years, Seaward engineers have provided technological solutions to such industry problems as energy absorption, corrosion, deterioration, flotation, abrasion, noise control, and other situations requiring the development of special materials. Trelleborg Engineered Products, Inc., acquired the business interests of Seaward International effective December 1, 2002. Trelleborg is a leading international company that serves a broad range of industries with polymer products. This transaction is supportive of and strengthens the Trelleborg strategic goals of being the worldwide leader in marine fender and flotation technology and products, and provides Seaward with significant growth opportunities in the international market. The tradition of Seaward quality, performance and technology associated with the Seaward brand name and products will continue.

The Engineered Plastics Division manufactures structurally reinforced composites from recycled plastic. SEAPILE composite marine piling and SEATIMBER composite marine timber are environmentally friendly materials made from recycled plastic reinforced with fiberglass reinforcing bars. Offering a superior alternative to traditional creosote and other chemically treated piling and timber, they are being used successfully in harbors and other marine settings on a gobal scale. First introduced in 1994 and 1995, SEAPILE and SEATIMBER products are manufactured in a continuous process, producing material without joints or discontinuities that can be made in any shippable length. The plastic compound is of Duralin a matrix of 100% recycled plastic designed by Seawards chemists & engineers for strength and ability to bond with structural elements. It is resistant to ultraviolet light, chipping, spalling, and impervious to marine borers. The products are totally non-corrosive and are 100% recycleable. Five sizes of SEAPILE are currently in production: 6” (150mm), 8.5” (215mm), 10” (250mm), 13” (330mm) and 16” (400mm) diameter. Also in production are a variety of sizes of SEATIMBER material: ranging from 4”x 4” (100mm x 100mm) up to the larger sizes of 8”x12” (200mm x 300mm), 10” x 10” (250mm x 250mm), 10” x 12” (250mm x 300mm) and 12”x 12” (300mm x 300mm).

Engineered properties of the composite pile and timber can vary to fit specific customer and project requirements through adjusting the quantity and diameter of the FRP rebars. The FRP rebars are pultruded, while a proprietary continuous extrusion process makes the composite pile and timber products. Seward manufactures both the FRP rebars and composite piles and timbers in its own facilities and has obtained four patents on the products and processes for manufacturing them.
