Company and Product Profile
Martin Marietta Composites (MMC)
is a subsidiary of Martin Marietta Materials, Inc., a $1.5
billion NYSE company and the nation’s second largest producer of
construction aggregates. Development of the DuraSpan™ deck
system began in late 1992 at Lockheed Martin Corporation’s
Missiles & Space Division’s Palo Alto Research & Development
Laboratory, where composite technology was analyzed for
potential use in transportation infrastructure. In 1995, Martin
Marietta Materials, itself a former subsidiary of the Lockheed
Martin Corporation, purchased the technology from Lockheed
Martin. Martin Marietta Materials established Martin Marietta
Composites, headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, to develop
and market composite products for construction, infrastructure
and transportation applications.
MMC’s products are recognized
worldwide for their engineering and quality. At MMC, we
understand that introducing a new material requires support and
teamwork. We are committed to providing that support, as well as
the expertise to assist our customers in making the transition
from traditional materials to composites. Our services include
finite element modeling (where needed), a technical staff with
both FRP and bridge expertise, extensive FRP resources, and
on-site field personnel to assist during installation. Numerous
DOTs, engineering consulting firms and contractors can
substantiate MMC’s quality FRP decks and extensive level of
design and field support.
